Statistics compiled by the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) show that overwhelmingly, excessive speed is the most common cause of injury and fatality car crashes in Orange County.
According to the most recent OTS statistics, in 2013, 14,839 victims were injured or killed in traffic accidents in Orange County. The number one cause of those accidents was excessive speed. In all, 2,499 of the total were speed related. Speeding is a particular problem in Orange County, which ranked third highest in speed-related injury and fatality accidents among all 58 counties in California.
According to statistics compiled by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, in 2014, speeding was a factor in 28 percent of fatal road accidents and was a factor in 30 percent of all fatality crashes since 2005. Interestingly, speeding is more likely to be a factor in crashes on minor roads than on major roads or freeways. The statistics show that speeding was a factor in 35% of fatality crashes on minor roads as opposed to 29% on interstates and freeways and 25% on major roads.
Perhaps not surprisingly, young males are the most likely drivers to be involved in serious speed-related accidents. According to NHTSA data, speed was a factor in 40% of fatality accidents involving males between the ages of 15 – 20.
